Recent Expansion into Food Grade Service Continues to Pay Off
Total Distribution, Inc. (TDI), a Peoples Services Company, has been serving the trucking industry for over 100 years. In the past 10 years, we have grown over 500 percent and acquired over eight million square feet of contract and public warehouse space located in seven states including Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. Our recent expansion into the food grade service industry has been a key factor in our rapid growth.
“We feel the food-related distribution should stay strong even during economic downtimes when manufacturing needs are lower,” said Doug Sibila, President and CEO of TDI.
The new venture began in 2017 when we purchased our first cold storage warehouse in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Following the purchase, we spent the next two years learning about the new industry and updating the facility to meet the increasing demand for cold storage. The updates included the installation of a new insulated roof, cooling equipment, new racking, automated freezer doors and seals, as well as offices.
Three years later, we were presented with a unique business opportunity in Midland, Michigan.
Central Warehouse Operations (CWO) located in Saginaw, Michigan is a distribution company that has been serving a local sugar company for over 20 years. CWO delivers bags of sugar, ranging in weight from 4 lbs. to 2000 lbs., everywhere from grocery stores to bakeries. They also handle molasses and remelt sugar. Remelt sugar is processed sugar that did not pass quality standards and is used to make lower-grade sugar used for feed.
In 2020, CWO’s Saginaw warehouse ran out of space and we were there to lend them a helping hand. Realizing the potential for a partnership, we upgraded our Midland warehouse to make room for the remelt sugar. The Midland facility now houses over 1.7M lbs. of remelt sugar and distributes 50 lbs. bags of finished sugar on pallets weighing 2,500 lbs. It was a win for both CWO and TDI.
Following the facility update in Midland, we welcomed one final acquisition in 2020. We added the assets of another cold storage facility in Akron, Ohio. This acquisition expanded our regional footprint in Northeast Ohio and improved the service level and flexibility to both their customers and ours.
These acquisitions continue to diversify and expand the food-related services offered by TDI and our affiliates. We look forward to our continued growth and have no plans of slowing down.
